Jon Ossoff – First Competitive Congressional Race of the Trump Era

The Republicans control the legislative and executive branches, so Democrats are looking to take advantage of Trump’s unfavorable approval ratings to win back seats in Congress. The first of these elections are upon us with Georgia’s Sixth District holding a special election to replace Tom Price, who is now the Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump administration.

The front-runner in this election is Jon Ossoff, a Democrat, one of 18 potential congressmen, but if no candidate receives at least 50% of the vote, there would be a run-off on June 20 between the top two candidates. But, even if Ossoff does lose, it would be impressive for Democrats because this district has elected Newt Gingrich for 20 years and Tom Price for 12, who both are hardcore Republicans.

With the election just 10 days away, both sides are scrambling to receive last-minute campaign contributions and support. There has been an unprecedented amount of money flow through this district’s congressional race with Ossoff raising over $8 million so far. On top of that, Paul Ryan’s SuperPAC has joined the fight with some brutal, slimy ads against Ossoff trying to connect him with Osama bin Laden.

I am signed up to receive Ossoff’s campaign emails, and I can tell you that they are desperately trying to clean up the mess that the negative ads have left by constantly pleading and begging for money. This election has been called a test to see if the anti-Trump strategy by the Democrats will work, and it really is, so it is necessary that Jon Ossoff gets a seat in Congress representing Georgia’s 6th District. If Ossoff is successful, he could be the spark of a nationwide democratic movement, which is what we need.
